About the "Iglootel" project

New concepts made of ice and light year after year

The IGLOOTEL Lapland, built entirely of ice and snow, literally shines in a new light every year. This is because the snow hotel has to be built from scratch every winter when the temperatures drop into the double-digit minus range and create the necessary basis for this extraordinary project. The construction uses artificial snow and natural ice blocks taken from a lake. When frozen, natural snow alone does not provide the necessary load-bearing capacity to build igloo structures with spans of over 10 meters.

Spectacular lighting effects

The lighting effects in the IGLOOTEL are particularly impressive. The lighting technology used must be able to withstand extreme external conditions for months on end, including temperatures of up to -40°C. This is a real test of endurance. The flexible LED circuit boards and spotlights used for the indirect lighting of ice blocks, floors and logo walls have been specially developed for this requirement and ensure trouble-free operation. The controllers and control systems are housed in a heated container.

Each year, the lighting scenes are programmed according to the hotel’s theme. This motto is traditionally determined by a group of students from the Academy for Craft Design at the Aachen Chamber of Crafts and implemented on site. If required, the system can also be controlled remotely from our office at any time.

As a sponsor, we support the project every year with new technical innovations that are tested under the extreme conditions of the hotel, similar to those in the automotive industry. These innovations are always complementary elements for the project, as the products that were supplied in the first few years are still technically flawlessly integrated into what is now the hotel’s eighth season.
